A quick trip to Copenhagen

Tuesday, Jan 30, 2024

I’d never been to Copenhagen and spent a whirlwind three days there last week. If you like to eat good food, drink good coffee, wine, beer and booze you really can’t go wrong.

I’ve been told that January is a bad time to go, but we were lucky with the weather and it wasn’t very crowded. We had the added benefit of nearly empty flights in each direction - so that was nice.

I just showed up and tagged along on an itinerary put together by a couple of friends who shall remain nameless - but to whom I’m grateful for making this one of the easier and tastier trips I’ve ever gone on.

If you happen to find yourself in Copenhagen I’m sure you’ll stumble into great stuff on your own, but here are some highlights for us:

For coffee and pastries:

  • Roast - was right down the street from our Airbnb. Lucky us. Excellent coffee and super friendly staff.

  • Seks - was a little further down the way and was similarly good. You also get to be a dumb american and giggle at the name. Always fun.

  • Prolog Coffee, Coffee Collective and Darcy’s Kaffe were also all great. It’s really kind of hard to get a bad cup of coffee in this town!

  • Also… every coffee shop has a great batch of pastries to grab with your drink, and there’s a bakery on almost every corner, but if you feel like going out of the way then Hart Bageri in the meatpacking district has these combo cardamon croissant things that are amazing.

For food (other than Noma):

  • Restaurant Schønnemann - for old school smørrebrød. You have to do it if you’re in town. If anyone has been to Keen’s in NYC I keep saying that it’s the Copenhagen equivalent - but for seafood. Get something with herring. Don’t be scared. It’s been around forever for a reason.

  • Admiralgade 26 - awesome hipster food in a laid back setting. Good wine. Nice room. Totally worth it.

  • Surt - excellent pizza. Very specific crust, tomatoes from someone’s uncle’s place in Sicily… everything you’d expect. It was a little out of the way but perfect after our lunch at Noma.

  • Nr30 - very small but very, very good. Take whatever reservation you can get and cram in for some of the best cooking we had. Really fun wine list as well that skewed less natural (or maybe that’s just how we ordered).

For just drinking:

  • Ved Stranden - wine bar with a very deep selection of natural wines. They don’t have a menu so be prepared to just talk to your waiter about what you want and what you want to spend and they’ll find something good for you.

  • Ruby - very famous spot for cocktails. We managed to sneak in without a reservation, but I think you’re supposed to make one. All the cocktails sound like they’re going to have garnishes that get in the way… but then they don’t - and the ice is really impressive.

That’s what we have to share. Hopefully you’ll wind up in Copenhagen one day too and this will be useful!
