Everyday Recipes

• I made an adaptation of this Steak Bites with Garlic Butter recipe the other night. I recommend giving it a try. I didn’t see much value in the steak “bites” part, so just pan-seared a whole steak. But the pan sauce turned out to be easy, quick and very tasty.

• It isn’t exactly tomato season anymore, but if you’re looking to cook something that might stretch some less-than-perfect tomatoes, this Zucchini and Tomato Gratin from the Jacques Pepin would be a solid option.

Project Time

• Although we call it a project, this Homemade Bacon recipe from Michael Ruhlman takes a lot more patience than actual work. It surprisingly doesn’t require any complicated technique or equipment. If your instinct is that it’d be a lot of trouble to make bacon yourself, you should read through this recipe. Or you might think that bacon from the package is good enough already, which is hard to argue with.

Something Fun (or Interesting)

• The folks at Chefsteps show you how to build a brick oven pizza with about $50 worth of bricks. It’s fun to see how they put this together, and also a practical project if you wanted to see how often you would actually use a pizza oven before buying that $$$$ one.
