The real best sandwich in Philly?

Thursday - Oct 26, 2023

We bring you quick, useful and fun cooking inspiration each day from places we like from around the web, in 3 minutes or less.

Let’s get to it, clock’s tickin’!

Everyday Recipes

  • I don’t often make a salad as a meal (though I’ll frequently buy a salad for a meal), but when I do it’ll likely be a Cobb (or some Cobb-ish variation). If you’re a frequent cook, you might not strictly need a recipe to make a Cobb salad, but this one from Alison Roman provides some great inspiration, and is hearty enough for dinner.

  • If you’ve made yourself a salad for dinner one night, you’ve earned the right to make yourself something a little less healthful the next. Cacio e pepe is, ingredient for ingredient, minute for minute, one of the simplest, fastest and most delicious pasta dishes you could make. Here’s a recipe from Michael Ruhlman (which was apparently inspired by Lydia Bastianich and Kenji).

Project Time

  • Char siu, or Chinese barbecue pork, holds a very special place in my heart. I used to work in a building next to the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia, and get char siu with greens and rice for lunch from the Sang Kee Peking Duck stall way too often. Everything about that plate of food was so simple and straightforward, but so incredibly tasty. Sadly, no longer living in Philly, my daily easeful access to char siu is gone. But it turns out not to be terribly difficult to make yourself. Here’s a recipe from The Woks of Life, and the Woks of Life have you covered if you feel like taking it a step further and making some pork buns with it (although served simply over some white rice with greens is pretty fantastic).

Something Fun (or Interesting)

  • Philly’s Reading Terminal Market is also home to another roast pork delicacy: the famous roast pork sandwich from Tommy DiNic’s. You’ll hear many Philadelphian’s say this sandwich, which includes sharp provolone and broccoli rabe, is superior to any cheesesteak in the city. Like my children, I couldn’t be forced to pick a favorite. But here’s a video from Goldbelly featuring DiNic’s owner, telling you more than you wanted to know about this delicious sandwich:
